Small Wolfstock

This enchanting 8-minute work for saxophone quartet from 1996 derives from Heininen's big band work "Wolfstock". Fast and rhythmically expressive first movement "Pup" is like a musical portrait of puppies playing about. Tranquil second movement "Bitch" sees the mother laying in the den, watching the little ones, while the last movement, "Werewolf", is a joyful portrayal of a hunting werewulf.

Idiomatic writing for both individual instruments and the ensemble makes this work ideal for recitals.
