Description
Paul Hindemith’s cantata Mainzer Umzug [“Mainz procession”] based on texts by Carl Zuckmayer was composed on the occasion of the 2000th anniversary of the city of Mainz. The work presents a reflectively jovial and highly entertaining summary of the city’s history and its individual figures provided by the three soloists “Böppche” soprano, “Schöppche” tenor and “Pronobis” baritone in regional dialect. The Mainzer Umzug gets rolling with Celtic prehistory and the procession continues with a depiction of significant eras and figures from Mainz’s past including the Romans, Charlemagne, the Franks and Burgundians, Boniface, Hato, Willigis, Barbarossa, Walpod, Isenburg, Frauenlob and Gutenberg and culminating with the Prussians.
